VILLAGE OF SHADOWS

Rajasthan is known for its rich history, culture and architecture. But a few kilometres from Jaisalmer, is Kuldhara, the abandoned village. Legend has it that the village was abandoned overnight and all its inhabitants disappeared mysteriously. Yet people have reported instances where they hear the wailing of a baby or smell the waft of freshly cooked food.

Naina was an archaeologist. She has a knack for paranormal investigation, so as soon as she was alloted a project in Jaisalmer, she made up her mind to explore the horrors of Kuldhara.

It was the night of Bhoot Chaturdashi. Naina had just returned to her hotel room and decided to embark on her expedition that very night. As the clock struck 2, she grabbed her torch, the EMF meter she got from her friend and her ID. She got into the car she rented and drove towards Kuldhara. After a good 10 minute drive, she saw the board saying "KULDHARA" and she parked the car there. She walked up to the ticket counter and showed her ID. Seeing that she was an employee of the Archaeological Survey of India, the supervisor half-heartedly agreed but warned her to return back as soon as she can.

With slow, calculated steps, Naina started studying the abandoned and dilapidated houses. As she crossed a house, the EMF meter started beeping. Sensing a presence, she entered the house and felt a sudden drop in temperature. The walls of the house were half covered in residues of sand and chipped off sandstone. The house had a hidden basement. Naina climbed down and entered the basement but her torch started flickering. She cursed under hr breath and took out her phone but noticed that it was about to switch off due to low battery. " It was fully charged when I left my room. How is it already discharged?" She kept the phone inside and directed her torch towards the wall. As she did so, she felt a dark shadow run across the room. Scared by this, Naina climbed up and got out of the house. With batted breath, she walked ahead. Unnerved by this, she turned back to return to her car when the EMF meter started beeping, strong wind blew and the smell of freshly cooked daal baati churma filled the air. Naina heard the wailing of a baby and whispers of conversations surrounded her. The EMF meter started beeping rapidly and ultimately broke and it's parts shattered everywhere. Her palms began sweating and her heart was going erratic. She began running towards the exit but her steps halted as she saw a silhouette in front of her. A hazy red shadow with gleaming eyes staring right into her soul. Before she could react she felt many such shadows surround her from all sides. The shadows closed around her as their whispers grew louder and before she knew it, her eyes closed and she fainted.

Naina woke up with a jerk as she realized she was lying on her hotel bed. " Was I dreaming all this while?" Saying this she turned to her bedside and saw the broken remnants of her EMF meter and a note next to it. The note was written with deep red ink( or maybe blood), which read ' रात ने काठेई मति आवाजे' ( don't ever come here at night). As she looked out the window, she found the same red gleaming eyes staring at her as if giving a warning.
