Kaushiki was a 2nd year medical student from AIIMS Delhi and to say that she is scared of ghosts would be an understatement. If it was possible, she would summon all the gods of heaven and hang on their shoulders and never get down if it meant that the ghost would never attack her.
One, not so fine, evening, Kaushiki was returning to her hostel after visiting her friends in a cafe across the city. It was a gloomy, chill evening and given Delhi's AQI, a clear winter evening was like wanting Pakistan to win the World Cup. She was riding her scooty she felt a pair of hands hugging her from behind. She peeked behind and her foot hit the brakes. A loud scream left her mouth as she saw a woman in white sitting on the backseat of her scooty. Long, open, black hair, white saree and black nails, just like those ghosts from the old bollywood movies. But what set this particular one apartment was that bright grin on her face.
Kaushiki was panting heavily as she parked her scooty on the side of the deserted road. She spoke out in a shrill voice, " Who.....who are- are you??" The reply came, " what do you think? Well of course I am a ghost." "Ho-how?", " What do you mean by how ? I mean I died, then I was like, ohh hell I died, might as well have some fun now. So I became a ghost." Kaushiki panicked and tried to shove the ghost away but her hand went through hers. She started chanting the hanuman chalisa but the ghost interrupted, "Hey, hey, this does not work for me. I am a friendly ghost. You can call me Mimi. Anyways I was kinda enjoying the ride. You might wanna start driving again unless you want to get a scolding from your warden."
With shaking hands, Kaushiki started driving. She kept on peeping towards the rear-view mirror and flinched every time she saw 'Mimi' grinning and enjoying the ride.
Soon she reached her hostel, walked up to her room and opened the door. Her face fell as she realized that her roommate had gone home. " Woww" came the voice from behind. Mimi jumped on the bed and remarked, "This room seems to have finished before it even started. How do you even live here?" Kaushiki walked to the water cooler, filled up a glass of water and drank it while muttering to herself, "I can't believe a ghost is sitting on my bed. Maa was right, I should've tied my hair before going out at night." Turning towards the bed, she glanced at the bed and asked, " So, uhmm, you're a 'ghost' ghost." Mimi replied, " Well technically yeah but I am definitely less of a 'ghost' than your ex. Girl, that man was crazy as hell.." Kaushiki sat down and said, "Oh, you know about Atharv." " Well I do know about him, I see him with every other girl in Delhi." Kaushiki was visibly flabbergasted.
After five minutes of intense eye contact, Kaushiki cleared her throat and asked, " Well, I guess it's just us now. So, how did you die?" Mimi, who was distracted by the labubu on the bed, answered, " Ohh! I was on the terrace of my hostel talking to my friend over the phone. She cracked a joke and I was so engrossed in laughing that I did not realise I was on the edge and I fell..So yeah, haste haste lag gaye raste (lost my way while laughing away)." " Must've been a really good joke, seeing that it made you a memory" Kaushiki said nervously. "Seeing that you have grown a liking towards me, I might as well clear some of my doubts regarding ghosts." " Go ahead" said Mimi. "Why do ghosts always wear white, like , why and no doubt they look kinda dirty, no offence." Mimi answered saying, " I felt the same, but sweetheart we don't have malls nor salons to deck ourselves up so it is what it is." " And why do you guys always haunt huge trees and luxurious mansions, like I have never heard about a ghost haunting a 1bhk apartment?" questioned Kaushiki. " That is because we have taste babe, 1bhk mein already log ek dusre pe chipke rehte hai, hum jaake kispe chipke? ( In 1bhks, people are already sticking to each other, whom do we go stick on?)" Mimi said as she gave her hair a flick and dust blew out of it. Kaushiki gasped at Mimi and said,"Makes sense. Anyways why do you always haunt at night not to mention that this is a very female-dominated field?" " Well, it gives good effects, just imagine a bloodied candle floating in the air would look much better at night as compared to the daytime. And as far as the women one is concerned, ya because ladko ko jeeteji apna moza to milta nahi, apna kaatil kaha dhundhenge? ( Men, when alive can't even find their socks, how will they find their murderers after becoming ghosts?) Idiots, I tell you." "Wow, who hurt you girl??" saying this Kaushiki heard her phone ring. She answered it and by the time she was done, the bed was empty. She looked around and saw the mirror in her room on which, with her pink lipstick, was written 'Nice meeting you. Hope to see you soon. P.s stay away from Atharv, he is not go
od'.
