CHAPTER 3

The first rays of the sun sprawled across the courtyard of the Roychoudhury Rajbari.

Soumi was sitting on the bed, shaking and chanting the Hanuman Chalisa. Samir moved in his sleep as the sun rays disturbed him. He opened his eyes and saw his wife sitting on the bed, shivering with fear. He jerked up and hugged Soumi to his chest as he said in a soft whisper, "Shh! Shh! Calm down. Did you get a panic attack again? Why didn't you wake me up? Soumi... tell me what's wrong."

With a wavering breath, Soumi narrated yesternight's incidents. Samir's expression turned from concern to disbelief. As Soumi finished speaking, Samir's expression lightened. He said, "I told you not to pay heed to the rumours of this house. I think you were dreaming, Soumi. You were tired, and because you slept thinking about that closed room, you dreamt of all these things."

Although she was not convinced, Samir's affirmations seemed to calm her down.

After some time, both of them freshened up and got ready for the post-wedding rituals. The laughter, teasing, and stolen moments of romance between the two seemed to make Soumi forget about last night's incidents.

All the family members were sitting outside having tea when they saw a taxi halt in front of their neighbour's house. A man of almost Samir's age frantically got off and ran inside the house as if terrified.

Soumi looked at Samir with a puzzled expression as Samir made a weird face, "That's Rajat, Manoj Uncle's son. He looks like he has seen a ghost."
